Hair Serum for Silky Smooth Locks

Shampoo Bar.jpeg

I'm not gonna lie to you. I am not the greatest example of someone who recycles. In part because we don't have the greatest recycling programs up here in Alaska. But still. I shouldn't play the blame game. If you have any great recycling tips I'd looooove to hear them in the comments! And, how is this relating back to hair serum? Bear with me. ;) About a year ago I switched to using shampoo bars for my hair. Because what's better than recycling? Why, not producing any waste to begin with! Have you heard about the zero waste movement? While I find that concept absolutely wonderful, it's also super intimidating. However, the concept is to simply reduce our waste. Easy concept, not always easy to enact.

I don't know about you, but I do best when I make small changes, otherwise I get burned out, overwhelmed, and thus give up. Finding daily switch-outs is a great way to start.

Cloth napkins versus paper towels for example. One small change I made was switching to shampoo bars because they come in either no packaging or minimal packaging that can be easily recycled. I was a bit leery at first because it seems so wildly weird to rub a bar of soap on my head. But ya know what? I love it!!! It's so simple, and my hair is doing great after about a year of using shampoo bars.

Now that leads us to the hair serum. The only issue I had with the shampoo bars was conditioner. The only option I found was using an apple cider vinegar rinse. And you guys. When others say the smell dissipates in seconds, they lie. Now, yes, I do use the ACV rinse on occasion. But enter this hair serum. Y'all. It's the bomb. Between that and the shampoo bar I rarely have to use the rinse. Plus my hair is silky smooth and not nearly as frizzy dry as it used to be. My hubby is totally appreciating that I’ve been wearing my hair down more than I ever have.

Keep in mind that my hair is naturally a bit wavy and tends to be more on the dry side. If you decide to try out shampoo bars I would give yourself a week or two just using the soap before adding in the oil to get your natural hair oils back to normal.

Here's how I make it:

Homemade hair serum for silky smooth locks | Mossy Meadow Farm | Intentional Living in the country with herbs, spices, and botanicals

Silky Smooth Hair Serum

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Argan Oil

  • 1 tablespoon Jojoba Oil

  • 12 drops of essential oil (for a 2% dilution)

    • I use 8 drops of distilled grapefruit EO** and 4 drops Rosemary EO

Directions

Simply combine all the ingredients together in a glass dropper bottle. Shake gently to mix.

How to use

You will want to apply this to damp hair. I apply after brushing, but if you have particularly tangly hair you may want to apply it before brushing.

I squirt a small amount into the palm of my hand. Then I flip my head over and gently work it in starting at the tips and scrunching it all over. Style us usual!

If you apply this to dry hair it tends to look greasy because it sticks to the dry hair and doesn't incorporate very well. I've never looked greasy applying it to damp hair. The amount you use will depend on how much hair you have. Here's a picture of the amount I use. Not quite a dropperful. Start small and work your way up. You may honestly only need a couple drops.

Benefits of the ingredients

Argan Oil

Argan oil comes from a nut in Morocco and is used in many high-end cosmetic products. Unfortunately is is frequently produced using unethical labor practices, so please be sure to source from a reputable company.

Argan is high in vitamins A and E, rich in antioxidants linoleic acid, and omega 6 fatty acids. This makes it deeply nourishing and conditioning for the hair. If applied correctly it is not-greasy and yet tames frizzy and flyaway hair. It also promotes body and shine while protecting the hair from heat if using curlers, straighteners, etc. It may help hair growth, so be sure to apply some to your roots!

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is one of the thickest oils and is actual

more of a liquid wax. It comes from a North American plant and is similar to human sebum. Jojoba is rich in vitamins A, E and B-complex and is wonderful for replenishing moisture to the hair while also improving the texture. It tames frizzy hair and works great as a detangler. It is also gaining popularity for treating alopecia and reversing hair loss.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary has been used throughout history to benefit hair growth, increase circulation to the scalp, and to help reduce hair loss. Some also claim that it may help with preventing baldness, slow the graying process, and treat dandruff and dry scalp.

Grapefruit Essential Oil

Grapefruit works to cleanse the hair while reducing grease and sweat. It also works to add volume and shine.

**If you do add grapefruit to your hair please be aware that using oil from the pressed peel can be photosensitive which could cause a bleaching effect. I recommend using steam distilled grapefruit which is not photo toxic.
